Taylor Lautner is literally offering thoughts and prayers to John Mayer ahead of Taylor Swift’s «Speak Now» rereleased album. On May 16, Today published an interview with Lautner — who briefly dated Swift in 2009 — during which the actor was asked how he feels about «Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),» a revamped version of the 2010 album, dropping this summer. «I think it’s a great album. Yeah, I feel safe,» Lautner said, though he added he’s «praying for John,» as the 45-year-old singer-songwriter is believed to be a target of some of Swift’s lyrics on the album.
Shortly after his interview, Lautner posted a hilarious TikTok of him actually praying for Mayer soundtracked to Swift’s «Dear John,» the record believed to be all about Mayer. «#prayforjohn,» he captioned it.
In a May 17 interview on SiriusXM’s «The Happy Hour,» Lautner clarified his «praying for John» comment and explained, «I don’t know if it was the wisest thing to say.» He said, «I was definitely joking,» and added that his wife, Taylor Dome, immediately knew the comment would go viral. «She’s like, that’s gonna really trigger the Swifties. Or, I mean, they’re supportive of it because, I mean, I don’t know. I personally think John is a very talented musician, but I am aware of a couple songs that were on that album.»
Though Lautner seems to be getting a kick out of what «Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)» could mean for Mayer when the album drops, the singer may not be as amused.
Mayer, who dated Swift from December 2009 to February 2010, previously spoke about his feelings around Swift’s «Dear John» during a 2012 Rolling Stone interview, revealing that he was «really humiliated» by it. «It made me feel terrible because I didn’t deserve it,» he said. «I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.»
Mayer also said that he «never got an e-mail» or «a phone call» from the «Midnights» singer to give him a heads up about her «Speak Now» song. «I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down,» he added. «I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?»
Some of Swift’s most notable lyrics from «Dear John» include, «Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young / To be messed with?» When Rolling Stone asked Mayer about the latter lyric, he declined to comment, saying, «I don’t want to go into that.»
Swift is known for sourcing material for her music from past relationships, including one of her most recent ones with ex Joe Alwyn. The former pair’s breakup news went public via Entertainment Tonight on April 10. It may be too soon for any of her tracks to be about her new rumored beau Matt Healy, as romance rumors first sparked in early May, but Swifties may be taking a closer look at «Dear John» and other «Speak Now» songs to dissect once the re-released album finally drops on July 7.
